Three SCP clubs to Advance to the 3rd Qualifying Round

CAL SOUTH - OCT 23, 2017

FULLERTON (Oct. 23, 2017) – Three Cal South affiliates are moving on to the Third Round of the 2018 US Open Cup Open Division Qualifiers after obtaining victories in the Second Round of Play last weekend. The three Southern California teams are part of the record-high of 108 amateur teams that entered the local qualifying round back in August.

Chula Vista FC, San Pedro Monsters and Buena Park FC will continue to represent Cal South and the SoCal Premier League in the Third Round of Play when the single-game elimination tournament kicks back up on November 18-19, 2017.

Chula Vista earned a 1-0 win over United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) side Valley United SC on Saturday at Heritage High School in North Hills. At the same time, the San Pedro Monsters swept SFV Scorpions SC 4-0 in Banning High School in Wilmington. On Sunday afternoon, Buena Park FC concluded play and earned their spot in the next round with a convincing 3-1 win over Santa Clarita Storm at John F. Kennedy High School in La Palma.

Last year, five Cal South affiliates moved on from the Open Division on to the tournament. LA Wolves FC represented Cal South in the oldest soccer tournament in the country, concluding their participation in the Third Round of action.

U.S. OPEN CUP Aug 29, 2017

CHICAGO (Aug. 29, 2017) – With the notoriety of amateur and lower division clubs in the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, U.S. Soccer’s National Championship, still fresh in the memory, a record-high 108 amateur teams have entered local qualifying for the 2018 edition, obliterating the previous record of 64 set last year.

Nearly all of the 108 entrants will see action in the first qualifying round, set for Sept. 23-24, with the match-ups announced today by U.S. Soccer. The history-filled annual tournament, entering its 105th year, is perhaps the only high-profile competition in American team sports where amateur sides, should they advance far enough, have the opportunity to face professionals in meaningful competition.

Open Division Local Qualifying – as this portion of the competition is called – will be conducted on a single-game, knockout basis. Match-ups are determined geographically to minimize travel time and expense, with random selection used when practicable to determine exact pairings. Home teams are determined by coin flip. The pairings for the second (Oct. 21-22) and third (Nov. 18-19) qualifying rounds will be determined and announced after each preceding round of games has taken place. The survivors after three qualifying rounds will advance to the first round of the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup next spring.

SoCal Premier League will be represented by 6 clubs in the 2017-18 tournament:

AC Brea Steaua United; Brea, Calif.
Buena Park FC; La Palma, Calif.
Chula Vista FC; Chula Vista, Calif.
Outbreak FC; Long Beach, Calif.
Real Sociedad Royals; Bellflower, Calif.
San Pedro Monsters FC; Wilmington, Calif.
